From the Principal
Bream Bay College has been going through a period of rebuilding over the past 6 years. The fruits of our work are now apparent in all areas. Our students have access to state of the art facilities, quality teachers, a wide range of support services, many sporting and cultural opportunities, a wide range of leadership opportunities and resources well in excess of other schools. The results produced by our students are well above the national averages.

About our School
Bream Bay College is a Year Seven to Thirteen school that brings together a unique combination of communities. The College is situated in the centre of Ruakaka, next to the local shopping centre. It serves this community, along with the rapidly growing area of Waipu to the south - a community with strong Scottish heritage, another rapidly expanding community at One Tree Point, the Marae-based community of Takahiwai to the North, and the farming communities of Mata and Springfield, inland.
The College was established on its present site in 1972 replacing Waipu District High School. Our main contributing schools are based at Waipu, One Tree Point and Ruakaka. The College’s Maori and Scottish heritage is evident throughout and has been woven into the organisational structure for pastoral care by linking four Scottish areas with the concept of Whanau to create the basis of the intra-school house competition.
Being a Year Seven to Thirteen school has many advantages for our students. The Year Seven and Eight students have access to full secondary school facilities such as custom labs and workshops. The curriculum for the school is coordinated from Year Seven to Thirteen. Our students become well known by staff, which results in the school having a family type atmosphere.
We are a Health Promoting School and have adopted a “School at the Centre
” philosophy. As a Health Promoting School we seek to enhance the emotional, social, physical and moral well-being of all our members. School at the Centre involves Bream Bay College and our community coming together to champion opportunities for youth education, experience, enterprise, and employment.
We offer excellent academic, physical, musical and social opportunities to our students. We look after our student’s mental and physical health through fully trained First Aid staff and a well-qualified Guidance Counsellor along with regular clinics by the Public Health Nurse and a Mental Health Nurse. The itinerant Dental Health Service visits every eighteen months.
Bream Bay College is at the forefront of Maori education with a bilingual unit operating for Year 7 and 8 students, year 9 and 10 and also the usual Te Reo Maori courses. We have very successful junior and senior kapahaka groups.
Our students and their families enjoy the unique lifestyle opportunities provided by our location. These include:
Students going into Years Seven and Eight. Year 6 students enrol at their local Primary School during term three and four. The Deans of Years Seven and Eight and the Principal will visit the Schools and arrange interviews. In term four, the Year 6 students visit Bream Bay College where they are shown around the school and are introduced to their Whanau class and subject teachers for the following year.
Seniors Confirmation of Enrolment: Students going into year twelve and thirteen must confirm their enrolment on the nominated day in the week before school starts back in January, between 9.00am and 12.00noon. Students going into year eleven who did not complete enrolment during their year ten, or who wish to make changes to their option choices, should also present for enrolment at this time.
Other New Students: Students new to the area enrol on the above day in January, between 9.00am and 12.00noon. The Principal will complete these enrolments.
Equipment/Stationery: All students are expected to have the following stationery on their first day:

Eraser (NB: twink is not permitted)
PE uniform (swimming togs) will also be necessary from the beginning of term. Students are expected to be prepared to take part in lessons by bringing their gear with them each day.
Students will be given a stationery list at the beginning of term one. Our local stationer "The Book End" supplies highly competitive prices at the start of term one through bulk franchise purchasing.
Students should have their complete stationery needs by the beginning of the second week of term. During term time the 'Book End' in the Town Centre supplies stationery for College students. Staff are available at a set time, in the Library, to meet Stationery requirements. Naturally, we encourage you to support our local businesses, as they do us.
The Student Diary: This diary and a year planner are issued free to all students. They have been produced by the College to assist students to plan and organise their homework and study time. Our aim is to encourage students to set themselves goals for the year and develop homework and study skills that will help them achieve these goals.
The diary also provides a means of communication between the school and parents/guardians. Co-operation between the school and families (in encouraging, guiding, and monitoring the students' efforts with homework and personal organisation) is essential if we are to fully develop their potential. Research shows clearly that when close home and school relations exist, students thrive!
Activity Fee: During the College year you will be asked to pay the school activity fee. Our activity fee has been set at $60.00 per year or $100 per family. This activity fee is used to enhance facilities to which all students have access. This includes the school magazine, swimming pool, library, information and communications technology (ICT) and sports equipment. As activity fees are a donation, we issue receipts for tax purposes.
Junior Blues recognise student achievement at Years 7 and 8
Students may gain Junior Blues in academic, sporting, cultural and service pursuits.

Kia Maia Badge: A Kia Maia Badge may be gained by:
A teacher may nominate one student per term for a Kia Maia Badge. The Deans of Year 7&8 and the Principal must agree before a student gains this badge.
^ This is the highest and most prestigious Junior Blue. In order to receive a Tumuaki Badge, a student must have a Kia Maia Badge and at least three other Junior Blues. The other blues must be from at least two different categories. A student may gain one Tumuaki Badge.
^ A formal Year 7&8 Assembly will take place each term for the awarding of Junior Blues.
Where to Place Junior Blues Stripes: The Junior Blues are sewn on items of uniform at the discretion of the student. They may be sewn on their shirt, jersey, sweatshirt or jacket. There is no limit to the number of academic, sporting, cultural or service blues that a student may gain.
Class structures at years 7 to 10 are arranged so that students of similar learning needs are grouped together. This enables the teacher to devote more time to the correct learning level of the students. At the end of term one, we will look carefully at the performance of the top and bottom five students in each class. Where students are performing close to the middle of a class above them we look to change their class up. Where students are performing close to or lower than the middle of a class below we will look to change their class down. Movements will only take place where class numbers allow.
Year 7 and 8
Students from Year 7 and 8 are grouped in composite classes called their homeroom class. This environment is a stable one, allowing students to work within familiar routines and in a classroom which they can call their own. In these homeroom classes students study English, Mathematics, Integrated Studies, Social Studies and Health with a single teacher called their homeroom teacher. Most of these teachers will also take another of their students’ subjects such as Maori or Physical Education. Students will spend between 17 and 19 hours (out of 25) with their homeroom teacher. Students are able to access fully equipped science laboratories, workshops, music and technology facilities along with specialist teachers for their other subjects.
The homeroom classes are structured to create a Bilingual class, an extension class, an accelerated learning class and mixed ability classes. This enables us to cater to the students’ individual learning needs.
Accelerated learning class: This class is set up in a way to allow us to raise the performance of students who come to us at a level of learning 3 or 4 years behind their age. The aim of the class is to progress students to year 9 level in two years. Some students may require a third year to get to this level.
^ This class has over 50% of its instruction delivered in Te Reo. The curriculum content is the same as the other classes. The students’ day will start with karakia and mihi and finish with mihi. A large number of these students are part of the kapa haka roopu.
^ These classes cater for students of all abilities. Where a student is well above average in a learning area, extension work will be supplied. Where a student is behind in a learning area, remedial work will be provided.
Extension class: This class covers the normal year 7 and 8 curriculum but in extra breadth. We do not accelerate students by giving them year 9 or above work. We would like them to achieve excellence at the year 7 and 8 level. Extension work provided to this class will be made available to students in the other classes where necessary.
Students in year 9 are organised in two bands. One band is for students who are performing highly in all their subjects and the other band is of mixed ability. All students will study the core subjects English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and PE and will choose 9 option subjects. The option subjects will last for one third of the year.
Students in year 10 are organised in two bands. One band is for students who are experiencing difficulty performing at the year 10 level in all their subjects and the other band is mixed ability. All students will study the core subjects English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and PE and will choose 3 option subjects.
